Where does satin come from?
Like many other luxurious fabrics with exceptional qualities, satin comes from the Far East. China is considered to be the place of its birth, from where this material has been exported to other countries, including ancient Greece, for about 2000 years. Its Chinese roots can also be evidenced by the translation of the name of the city of Quanzhou into Arabic: "Zaiton". This is the word from which the Polish name satin and its equivalents in other European languages derive.
On the territory of Europe, the material appeared only in the XII century. At that time, many different fabrics were already used. Against their background , satin quickly began to be considered luxurious due to its delicacy and exceptional usability. Its high status was also evidenced by the price – especially since satin was initially produced from a large amount of silk threads, and only later from very thin cotton yarn. The high cost and limited export of this material meant that it was available only to a few. In the Middle Ages, it could be afforded mainly by higher-ranking representatives of the Church and royal courts. Much less often in satin fabrics dressed rich nobility.
Technological development and the invention of weaving machines contributed to the popularization of satin. Thanks to them, its production was faster and possible on a larger scale. Initially, mainly wedding dresses were sewn from satin, and this tradition was initiated by the British Queen Victoria, who in 1840 in a creation from this material married Prince Albert Saxe-Cobourg. However, the fabric entered everyday fashion only in the twentieth century. In lingerie and outerwear made of satin, the singer Madonna often showed up m.in.

How is satin made?
Many people associate satin mainly with a delicate material with a light and airy structure, made of cotton. However, in reality, this name is used not to describe the type of fibers, but the way they are weaving. Hence, in stores you can find silk, cotton and even artificial satin. They all have one thing in common – they are made of very thin threads woven with satin and satin weave (currently it is satin, weft and warp weave).
Elastic and shiny satin owes its exceptional qualities primarily to the production method. Although initially it was made exclusively of silk, now much more popular is the one made of cotton with a density of 85-130 wefts. To obtain the desired properties of the fabric, it is necessary to carefully prepare the fibers, which in the processing process gain mechanical strength and gloss. This process consists in mercerization, i.e. alternating subjecting cotton fibers to alkaline and acid solutions, including sodium hydroxide (lye). This compound deprives the fiber of a matte surface, gives the fabric elasticity and strength, allowing for stronger twisting of the fibers, and facilitates dyeing.
The gloss of the fabric is the result of the way it is weaving, or rather the weft and warp arrangement. Strongly twisted threads of the thread can be several times more. Thanks to this, the surface of the satin is shiny, and its other side dominated by warp threads – matte. In the case of using a satin weave, the number of shiny weft threads dominates on the right side of the fabric, and on its left side matte warp threads prevail (satin warp weave). The degree of gloss is achieved by modifying the number of wefts in relation to the number of warp threads. There is a five- and seven-thread satin weave.
Satin – material in several varieties
As mentioned earlier, satin is not a type of fiber, but a weave that can be used to weave materials from different fibers. The oldest satin was made of silk, which is why it was very expensive and at the same time luxurious. The assortment of our store is also dominated by silk satin by the meter, but now the methods of its production have been automated. Therefore, the fabric retains aesthetic and functional values and is still a luxury material, but at the same time it is much cheaper and more easily available.
In addition to the silk version, cotton satin is also popular. It is often chosen for bedding, due to its advantages such as anti-allergenicity, soft structure or breathability. On sale there is also satin jacquard, which resembles printed silk. Elastic satin, silk or cotton can also be dyed in one color or printed in various patterns.
Other variants of this material are viscose and polyester satin. The latter is as light and delicate as the natural fiber versions, but has slightly different features. It may be less tolerated by sensitive skin. On the other hand, it does not absorb water. As a result, it dries quickly after washing and does not retain sweat.
What fabric is silk satin?
Fabrics made of silk such as satin are characterized by smoothness, lightness and delicacy, which makes them considered noble products, evoking understandable associations with famous fashion houses. Like linen, silk satin by meters does not cause skin irritation, which will certainly be appreciated by every allergy sufferer. The fabric protects the skin from sunlight, but at the same time it can turn yellow as a result of excessive exposure to sunlight, so avoid drying satin fabrics in full sun.
Satin fits beautifully on the body and blends perfectly with lace. That is why it is an ideal material for wedding dresses and elegant and very feminine evening creations. Its other advantages are:
- hypoallergenic character, thanks to which it can also be worn by people with sensitive skin and susceptible to allergies,
- breathability, which ensures skin breathability,
- pleasant, silky texture,
- absence of toxic substances,
- good thermal insulation, which results from the density of the weave,
- intense gloss,
- elegant and representative appearance,
- lack of tendency to crease.
Patterned satin available in our warehouse will work as a fabric for light, airy dresses, eye-catching skirts or styling accessories such as scarves and scarves. How to combine silk satin with other clothes? Unobvious combinations are a perfect solution – a delicate satin dress and a heavy woolen sweater together with massive footwear will create a characterful stylization, although not devoid of femininity. Smooth satin will also be great in the company of denim, which due to its versatility does not impose limiting fashion schemes.
