Taffeta is characterized by its structure. It is relatively stiff, extremely durable and impressive. Thanks to this, you can fancifully drap it on the figure, creating one-of-a-kind creations. At the same time, it is also a fabric that can be bought at a really attractive price. Check what possibilities taffeta can give.
A few words about the tatra
Tafta is a dense, which is also quite rigid, material with a canvas weave. However, do not be fooled by this generalized description, because taffeta is an extremely noble fabric. More precisely, high-quality taffeta can be made of natural silk, which gives it an unmistakable shine. Of course, nowadays it is not difficult to buy much cheaper substitutes, which are made of synthetic fibers, such as polyester, nylon or viscose – which, however, like silk, will provide better air permeability.
Many people associate taffeta as a material with a specific way of wearing it – it is a fabric that rustles with every movement. This is because it is rigid. This means that it will not deform. Tafta gives the impression of being well starched, which tends to maintain the shape given to it.
Tafta – a material with versatile capabilities
A noble material such as taffeta can be used in many ways. On the one hand, it is ideal as a base for creating evening creations, but it will also work well for sewing a blouse or even home accessories. The word "tafta" is derived from the Persian language and means "twisted weave", which refers to the way it is woven.
- Formal dresses
Traditionally, taffeta was used primarily for sewing everyday clothing (especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries), but also ball, wedding dresses and corsets. That is why nowadays taffeta is considered an elegant and luxurious fabric, most often used for sewing wedding, cocktail and evening dresses.

- Evening wear

- Elegant clothing for important occasions
You can also reach for taffeta when planning to sew elegant blouses, skirts, costumes or women's suits. Currently, it is not the most popular choice, but after some time taffeta may return to favor, because in this role it was very popular in the nineties and early 2000s.
- Home accessories
It is not worth limiting yourself only to evening dresses. Taffeta material, thanks to its numerous advantages, will also work as a decoration in your home. It is useful in interior decoration, e.g. to create curtains and once it was even used as a material for wallpaper and wall decorations.
Taffeta – fabric of many faces
Most importantly for its lovers, taffeta shimmers beautifully on the move. Depending on the light falling on the material, especially if the warp and the taffeta weft are in different colors, the fabric will shimmer in both colors. Thanks to this, the clothing changes, and each bend on the material seems to have additional depth, which creates a unique effect – desirable especially when we care about impeccable appearance.
You can stock up on taffeta with a clearer structure or a texture that can be felt under your fingers. Scratched taffeta (or crushed or wavy taffeta), embossed or embroidered are the most popular variants. The most common pattern is flowers, although among the fabrics available for sale you will also find a taffeta with a print or decorated with a burner.
